Hargeisa – Somaliland has implemented a digital platform to monitor and regulate carbon emissions, marking a significant advancement in addressing climate change and environmental preservation.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change revealed on Thursday that the system, named “Green-Gate,” will assess and control carbon emissions produced by industrial operations, transportation networks, and development initiatives throughout the region.
According to ministry officials, the platform is engineered to digitally document and trace emissions data, enhancing transparency and accountability while motivating enterprises and organizations to embrace eco-friendly methods.
Authorities stated that the initiative represents wider endeavors to conserve natural resources, specifically air quality and plant life, which have faced mounting pressure from climate-related challenges.
“Green-Gate is a contemporary system that allows us to measure, manage and diminish harmful emissions,” the ministry communicated in an official statement. “It will reinforce environmental protection and ensure responsible development.”
The system aims not only to monitor emissions but also to foster pollutant reduction by encouraging cleaner technologies and sustainable approaches.
This development occurs as worldwide carbon emissions continue to propel rising temperatures, glacier melting, and progressively extreme natural calamities, such as floods, cyclones, and extended droughts. Climate scientists caution that without considerable decreases in greenhouse gases, environmental deterioration will intensify, with far-reaching implications for human wellbeing, food stability, and ecological systems.
Somalia, including Somaliland, has directly experienced the repercussions of climate change. Recurrent droughts have devastated livestock populations, undermined rural livelihoods, and stressed already scarce water resources. Unpredictable precipitation patterns and increasing temperatures have also interfered with agricultural output, intensifying food insecurity in susceptible communities. The Ministry underscores that the Green-Gate system constitutes part of a long-term strategy to alleviate these impacts by synchronizing environmental management with worldwide climate benchmarks.
