Mogadishu (HOL) Somali Police Force chief Brig. Gen. Asad Osman Abdullahi met with leaders of the Independent National Human Rights Commission to discuss cooperation on human rights protections, accountability and oversight of detention facilities.
The meeting was attended by the commission’s chairperson, Dr. Maryam Qaasim, Deputy Chairperson Mohamed Harun, Director General Mustafa Ahmed and other commissioners.
Officials said the talks focused on strengthening coordination between the police and the human rights commission, particularly in handling public complaints, monitoring prisons and detention centers, and improving accountability within law enforcement institutions.
Both sides emphasized the need to protect citizens’ rights while ensuring that police operations comply with human rights principles and the rule of law.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of regular coordination between security agencies and human rights bodies to improve oversight, promote justice and build public confidence in national institutions.
The meeting comes as Somali authorities face growing scrutiny from rights groups and opposition figures over arrests, detention conditions and the handling of public protests in Mogadishu.
