Mogadishu – Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission has
launched a preliminary inquiry into reported civilian casualties in the Lower
Juba region.
According to the commission, the incident occurred on May 20 in the Diigta
Margoos area of Kamjiroon, where civilians were allegedly killed by armed
individuals.
No organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.
“The commission is collecting information regarding the events and the context
of the killings,” the statement noted.
The commission mentioned it is working alongside local authorities, civil
society organizations and independent sources to gather comprehensive and
dependable information.
It emphasized that the protection of civilian life is a basic right enshrined
in Somalia’s federal constitution and international human rights agreements.
The commission urged security and judicial bodies to fulfill their duties in
safeguarding civilians, preserving security and ensuring accountability.
Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed, chair of the commission, expressed sympathy to the
victims’ families and others impacted by the incident.
The commission stated it will persist in monitoring, pursuing and examining
claimed human rights violations to promote accountability and justice.
